The following paper presents a clear and sufficiently elaborated method for proper selection of the inductance and capacitance of TCSC. The main selection criterion of inductor sizing is "the length of operating area required for inductive and capacities region".

The selection of the capacitive, and inductive ranges depend on the extent of the desired power flow control. If the target is to increase the power flow on a line, then the capacitive mode is required, while the inductive mode is required for reducing the power flow. If the ranges are improperly selected by the design of the TCSC, it may not able to provide the intended control functions of installing it.
