While searching for patents on derwentinnovation.com I am facing a weird situation. While searching for patents with a certain set of keywords, I always use the 'smart search' option. Now while searching for existing patents with a certain set of keywords, I followed 2 ways-
In the 1st case while it is giving quite a number of hits(almost 800), in the second case it is showing no patents found. What should I do? What is the correct way to search patents in derwent? i am researching on an idea I have and want to know if any patent already exist or not on it. Please help me, I am a new researcher.

I will try to address the two main questions ( the first pertains to search results and the second pertains to the correct way to search) that you have
While not being able to see the interface nor the programming I can only hint at a possible explanation. Search engines can follow strict Boolean implementations or a BM- _ _ variant. Most patent search engines usually use Boolean searches though. An explanation for your result is that method 1 is using an 'or' while 2 is using an 'and'.
Now for your second question
The answer is that there is no perfect way to use for all search engines. What I can suggest is a general guideline:
1) use a Boolean 'or' to start
2) if step 1 returns too many results choose an 'and'
3) evaluate the results and check if you need to change keywords
4) from several iterations of this procedure, choose the best results that closely match what are the closest matches to your query
5) check for extra terms within the matching result and go to step1 to repeat
6) once you have exhausted the steps 1-5 then look at the CPC and US classifications and redo the searches by class.
7) if the class is too big then restrict the search starting with the most general terms and narrow down progressively to the most restrictive terms.
Repeat this process not just with derwent but use the region's search engine as well as other search engines such as Google patents.

If you use AND operator between two words then your search will be narrowed, that's the reason you are getting zero results. Check the operator in between two terms.
