I want to perform bone marrow transplantation on mice. First of all I want a total ablation of the BM of the recipient. I plan to achieve this using irradiation. I want to preserve the BBB of the mice because I don't want any BM transplanted cells to invade the brain. I was wondering if the mice's heads are outside the irradiation area the BBB will stay intact ?? Does anybody have experience with this ? I don't really want to use a headshield because I would like to irradiate several mice at the same time in a "3D-printed cage" where all the body is irradiated except the head which is outside the box....

Hi Pauline Janssen I do not know your specific radiation treatment of the mice, but I do know that irradiation of human brain cancer patients would not be performed if it opened up the BBB.

Well we want to achieve a total myeloablation so we will try 1000cGy (split in 2*500cGy). Do you think if the head of the mouse is outside the irradiation field the BBB will be preserved ??
