I plan to collect marine sea stars from a far sampling site at around 6 hours of travel and freeze drying would not be immediately possible for around 2-3 days. How do I travel the marine sea stars as not encourage decomposition and oxidation in my samples for extraction of marine natural products. Analysis will be done after freeze drying.
Marine sample shipped to the Natural Products Repository in NCI-Frederick are received deep frozen packed in dry ice (DOI: 10.1039/b602674p). First an aqueous extract is prepared and then the remaining marine material is used for an organic extraction using the protocol outlined in Molecules 2010, 15, 4526-4563; doi:10.3390/molecules15074526.

In my knowledge , it depends on what is the source of extraction of your natural compound. If you need the whole live sea star, you could try carrying them in a tank containing sea water. If you have power supply in your collection van, you could attach an aerator to it. This should keep your samples alive for some time. Otherwise, you could extract your bioactive sample extract at the sampling site and deep-freeze that in portable containers containing dry ice or ice packs.
