In order to ensure adequate amount of plant essential nutrient elements for normal growth and development rather than salinity effect, Hoagland solution was applied in soil medium for salinity experiment.

Dear Fatema, I hope I can help you a little bit: Question 1: I don’t know the fertilizers you mentioned. That means I don’ know their composition. But I can send you the original recipe for the Hoagland solution a) and b) from an old paper (see attachment GefversuchDg.pdf). Sorry, it is written in German. But that should not be a problem. The formulas are universal and the few words, if not clear from the context, can also be the google translator or cc dict or other. So you can determine for yourself whether your fertilizers are suitable. We always produce stock solution from the individual components. For 100 ml of stock solution, here an example for Hoagland a) (see attachment Hoagland_Lsg_herstellen) we weigh the following amounts and dissolve successively in 20°C warm water. We carry out our experiments in Mitscherlich vessels, filled with 6 kg quartz sand. 0.5 ml of the Hoagland solution a) and b) are added to 500 ml of water per vessel. In these 500 ml of water also the macronutrients are solved (see attachment Düngung der Gefäße). This even the poured over the quartz sand. Finally add 1 kg quartz sand again. This is done so that the seedlings, we are working with cereals, do not immediately come in contact with the aggressive fertilizers. In the beginning, the seedling receives all its nutrients from the grain. The cereal is than sown in this top layer. Question 2: As far I know, this mixture can also be used in normal soil.

@Fatema, to answer your 3. question: Nutrient-water cultures (=hydroponic) are used to identify nutrient needs, including the identification of physiological effects that are associated with a sudden change in nutrient supplement. Quartz sand cultures and soil cultures are used to determine the nutrients requirement or the need of fertilization. Mostly you take to the investigation of nutrients requirement quartz sand cultures and to the investigation of fertilization requirement soil cultures. When using quartz sand, you must add the micronutrients in the form of Hoagland a) and b) to avoid a deficiency. However, one has to give the Hoagland b) solution only molybdenum. Depending on the soil type, micronutrients may also omitted in the case of soil culture experiments if it is certain that there is no shortage. For example, if you want to know what happens when a particular nutrient is lacking, just leave it out. In such a case it is also important to know exactly which nutrients were available in which quantity. In such a case you need an exactly defined fertilizer like Hoagland solution. However, if you only want to provide your plants with sufficient fertilizer, but the knowledge of exact supply of nutrients does not matter, you can also take usual ready-made fertilizers. You just have to treat al variants the same way.

Much appreciated dear Petra! Have you ever used H.S as a source of organic carbon too in addition to the essential plant nutrients? If so how effective is that as a source of carbon? TIA.

Dear Fatema, we always have the Hoagland a) solution used in out trials. But only as a source of micronutrients to supplement the macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca). As a C-source we don’t consider Hoagland solution. The quantities are much too low for that. In addition, plants produce their own carbon, through photosynthesis! I don’t quite understand the question…

Dear Hamza Sohail, Thanks for your interest. In my case, I applied full-strength of Hoagland solution to each pot in excess of the saturation capacity of vermiculite and then drained to maintain the field capacity. I think, adjusting the moisture level of soil should depend on your purpose of study.

I would like to produce Zinc deficiency in hydroponic corn. I have use the Hoagland solutions from wikipedia, with and without zinc. The results were similar. Has anybody work in this crop?

I know this was posted a few years ago, but this thread crops up with most Google searches on "how much Hoagland's to add". When you say you add 0.5mL HS per 500mL of water, is that also the ratio you use when adding more fertiliser as the plants grow? How often do you add it? And have you published any papers that show your use of this method that I may cite?

Dear Martin J Lambert , Thanks for this interesting question. The recipe is already old (Schrop, 1951) and the Hoagland and Snyder A-Z solution is only for the micronutrients! Plants need very little of these. Some are toxic in higher dosage, e.g., Al. Therefore, it is also enough to add only 0.5 ml in the concentrated solution in the 500 ml and you have to do it only once: Together with the basic fertilization for macronutrients before sowing or planting. Originally, Hoagland A-Z was developed for hydroponic grown crops. The recipe I posted at the top of the thread comes from the Institute of Physiology and Nutrition of Cultivated Plants at Martin Luther University Halle. I learned about it there during my studies in the 1980s (Schilling 1982). It was modified specifically for cereals in Mitscherlich pots with quartz sand. Normal soil usually does not need additional micronutrients. I have been working with it for many years, it always works!
