I am currently working on a bibliometric analysis. As part of the study, I would like to add a co-citation network analysis to the paper. I already prepared citation network data for gephi incl. a node and an edge sheet. This already creates a workable citation network. A a the next step I would like to develop the data for a co-citation analysis. Unfortunately I do not find any useful description how to get my data prepared for a co-citation analysis. Do you have any recommendation for a software / tool to extract co-citation data form my already existing citation network?

If your existing citation network is of the form "how often did an article by A cite cite an article by B," that will not help you create a co-citation network, which is of the form "how often were A and B both cited in the same article."

Unfortunately, none of the currently available algorithms implemented in the gephi is able to calculate these indicators and none of the available SNA metrics will be the right substitute for bib-coupling and co-citation. These deficiencies have inspired me to start my project:

Of course, you can always build co-citation and bib-coupling networks in another tool, and use the gephi platform only to visualize them. An example can be found here (Fig.12-15):

Thanks a lot Anna Małgorzata Kamińska and David L Morgan for your comments and your time. I did some further research on this item and my current call is to work on it manually studying all citations per paper, looking for co citations that connect within my existing citation network. e.g. downloading all papers, reviewing „how many times did paper X and Y got cited together by another paper“ - having around 185 papers in my final raw data this might take some days but it looks to me like my only chance. Thoughts on this with regards to methodology?

You can use BibExcel to prepare the co-citation matrix and then import it into Gephi for clustering and visualization.
