There are different methods for preparing magnesium alloys for EBSD studies. One method is electropolishing with electrolytes such as a 10% (v/v) mixture of 35-38% hydrochloric acid in some ethyl solution (How to prepare Mg alloys for....). Another method is mechanical polishing which can be done in just 3 hours (Which is the best method of sample preparation for Magnesium alloy EBSD ....).

For AZ91 magnesium samples specifically, researchers have examined the phase constitution of AZ91 alloy to understand whether any structural changes have taken place after electromagnetic stirring. The XRD patterns reveal that the AZ91 alloy is mainly composed of Mg phase and Mg17Al12 phase (Improving the microstructure and tensile properties of AZ91 magnesium ......).
