Highway is the link between urban area and rural area. A picture of highway or its exit might serve the purpose of showing the urban-rural nexus. I am not familiar with German situation. But, in the context of China, urban tourists in the countryside are also an important link in the urban-rural nexus. In that case, a photo of urban tourists in the countryside, especially rural B&Bs, would be good.

The balancing of interests between urban, peri-urban and rural areas is a challenging factor for the land planner, in the context near to highways or road, that will be under use of different mind set, but as a transportation engineer and Urban planner for me its important something that didn't divert their attention to much and also give them eye sight landscape view. 2nd Point: except Germany Specially in (Baveria) where people are more rich as compare to urban areas, so their life standard and style is way modern then people live in cities, but in the other area, to strengthen the rural areas in economic prospective its better to come up with the area productions, their achievement, etc Just idea as a research learner

I suggest a series of pictorial maps based on the von Thunen paradigm (pro and contra) with indeed (Deng above) lines of bulk transport of goods, energy and persons (highway, river, rail, power-line; gas bulk pipeline; coast; airports, harbors), at finer scale doubling as barrier in the perpendicular direction. With zoning categories (residential in density classes, field farming, greenhouse/industrial piggeries, chicken industry, recreation, industry, forest(ry) ......Line width as a function of amounts. May be land price. And at three different scales.

I would recommend that you work together with regional planners, urban planners and/or landscape architects with a regional focus. There are many ways of representing the theme. You usually find them in connection with regional planning procedures, Landesentwicklungsplänen etc.

An aerial view of city which have perspective from core to periphery following a transportation, river or building would be apt for photographs showing urban-periphery and rural linkages.

In my opinion, the use of drones and the pursuit of the flow of goods and humans through continuous shooting provides a good opportunity to understand the relationship between the city and the countryside.

I remembered Christopher Alexander, when he puts out that the morphology limits between rural and urban areas would be better designing a curvilinear, as a 2d shape, taking small recess areas to contact the two kinds of territory usage. He referred many reasons to it, among them the holistic approach and the sustainable form. The reference book is "A Pattern Language". I suggest that you use a computer program that can read the photographs or film shoots from rural-urban-nexus areas. Then, understand the image of five rural-urban-or-nexus aspects, namely: path pattern, edge shape, central node of the crowd, differences between districts, and landmarks of the region. Perhaps, the capture program of these five aspects can help in imagining rural-urban-or-nexus areas.

Thank you for the thoughts and inspirational ideas. Our challenge is to illustrate everything on a single picture that is both technically and emotionally speaking for itself, i.e. the rural-urban specificity is pictured in a correct and clear way, which is easily understood - and the photo addresses a personal level of communication by demonstrating a behaviour or state that is a day-to-day situation and that could be "you and me" - in other words, it is a topic that everybody should be concerned about. - Our approach for the moment is to think of situations (e.g. cycling for leissure or with fresh fruits from a farmers' market; waiting for a bus; harvesting; walking; ...), in which a pair or small group of persons interacts and where the background is indicating the rural-urban links in addition to the persons (who's clothing and accessoires can aslo indicate a rural or urban background - according to stereotypes [that are questionned]). For the background, we intend to use drone imaging to get a suitable deep perspective into the countryside/urban skyline. I will keep you updated and will be posting the outcome. If you had further thoughts or suggestions, please add them.

The story of the urban-rural nexus is told in the land prices. Why might there be a discontinuity at the boundary between these areas? Why might there be no price gradient in the rural area? The answer is that there is a zoning noose around the urban area. In contrast, what would cause the opposite: a price gradient in the rural area and continuous prices at the boundary? This would be an uncontrolled boundary. Why would the price gradient exist in the rural-agricultural area? Because there is an option to develop and the value of the option increases as property gets closer to the boundary. That option is being exercised at the boundary as conversion from rural to urban uses takes place. What can we learn about the option to develop from the curvature of the land price-parcel size relationship in the rural area. If it is a concave function, then the option to develop exists. That is, there is a surplus associated with subdivision . . . of course, in equilibrium that surplus just covers the cost of subdivision.

Peter Colwell's answer is right-on. Empirically, the nexus is the point where the curvature of the land price-lot size function shifts from convex to concave. Read "The Structure of Urban Land Prices" for more insight. Lot-size zoning restrictions will complicate the issue if the nexus is near a lot-size zoning boundary.

Hans, thank you for your vote of confidence. On the other hand, one should not necessarily be disappointed if you find that the land price-lot size relationship is not found to be convex in the agricultural zone. The reason is that the costs of land assembly are not profound. So look for the relationship to be more linear in the agricultural zone.
