I got some Uranyl Nitrate crystals and want to get Uranium metal, to start, think I can use heating to decompose the nitrate salt in order to get the oxide, and then I should reduce the oxide to the metal form, but do not know how. Appreciate your help.
1. Uranyl Nitrate is converted to oxide by calcination. Subsequent treatment of powdered uranium oxide with gaseous hydrogen fluoride (HF) produces uranium tetrafluoride.
2. Metallic uranium is obtained from uranium oxides (by reduction with graphite in vacuum) or from hexafluoride (by reduction with magnesium - AMES process).
Florian Glodeanu Is there any other method or reagent to carry out the reduction of the uranium oxide? Something more easy to do in a simple lab.
