However, the strategies suggested by you do not work. I had carried out experimental work on gas- solid and liquid - solid fluidization in tapered for about a decade and also three phase fluidization in cylindrical vessels. But, I remember to have seen a paper in a journal and am not able to trace.
Maybe a silly question, but are you in the gas-phase slug-flow regime, if so the bed will transport with the slugs. Slugging is set by the L/D ratio and the gas velocity, according to G.I Taylor theory.
