The definition of a beam section with variable thickness is quite expensive. Therefore, I would prefer a modeling with shell elements. Especially for open cross sections this is also more precise.

Repeat the second data line as often as necessary to define the ARBITRARY section.

For a beam with variable thickness over the length these data must given for many beam elements. Therefore, in my opinion it is in this case better to define the U-section geometry and to mesh this geometry with shell elements (for example S4).
