I have been trying to model an experimental setup in which there is a steel pipe of 1m in length and 1.5mm thickness. Some gases are flowing in the pipe. The pipe is being heated in the middle (1/3rd of the entire length). Is it necessary to include the thickness of the pipe in the model or only the fluid domain will suffice? Many youtube videos don't include the thickness of the bodies in their simulations. Doesn't it affect the solution if we do not model the thickness as the pipe is being heated from outside?
It depends on your objective of analysis. If you need the temperature distribution over the pipe thickness duly considering the effects of solid body over fluid domain, you need to model the pipe with thickness and create interface defined for heat transfer. Also, you'll need to refine mesh at the boundary to capture the boundary layer accurately. Most analysts avoid it due to the interface creation and mesh size.
