How to Model a Crack in an IPE 160 Beam for Modal Analysis in ANSYS Workbench?

Hello,

I am trying to perform a modal analysis of an IPE 160 beam in ANSYS Workbench. I want to:

Model a beam with a crack at the midspan.

Compare its mode shapes and natural frequencies with the uncracked beam.

I am looking for guidance on:

How to introduce a crack in the geometry or mesh effectively for this type of analysis.
Recommended methods or features in ANSYS Workbench suitable for this scenario.

I do not need to simulate crack propagation just the effect of a static crack on the modal behavior.

Any advice, examples, or references would be appreciated.

You can create a small slot or cut at midspan to represent the crack, or assign a reduced stiffness zone instead. Then go ahead and refine the mesh around the crack and set up a standard modal analysis. Afterwards, just compare the frequencies and mode shapes of the cracked beam with the intact one to see the effect.
