There are many ecosystem services in the wetlands, such as habitat protection, material circulation. Does anyone have good suggestions for measuring such services?
You should use any of the environmental ecology model for finding answer of your problem. For assessing habitat protection value, first document the biota present there, and their use value per unit area.
Waterbirds are a visible, relatively easily monitored and important part of the coastal ecosystem. They are being seriously affected by coastal reclamation and as a result their populations are declining rapidly with some species being driven to extinction.
A range of waterbird monitoring efforts have been underway along coastal China and be useful to review. Wetlands International has produced various reports that are available on our website on this subject; www.wetlands.org search for key words including Yellow Sea, East Asian-Australasian Flyway
A few years ago, a valuable review was produced by IUCN that provides a good baseline; it can be downloaded in English, Chinese and Korean from http://www.iucn.org/about/work/programmes/species/our_work/regional_initiatives/asian_coastal_wetlands/
The Queensland University are studying the changes in waterbird populations across the flyway, including impacts of coastal reclamation and other habitat loss.
