Porous ceramic substrates coated with some coatings are now ready to use in their application, but we need to be completely sure about the lifetime of the coatings.
So, which method do you suggest as the best one to measure the adhesion of coating into such complex and torturous porous structures? any standard test method is highly appreciated.
Depends on what coatings you are referring to on the ceramics.
If metallic coatings are deposited on ceramics, then
A standard simple test: Take a cello tape, or a scotch tape and stick it on to the coated ceramic, and then peel the tape away. If the coating comes off, then it means very poor adhesion.
Secondly, subject the (ceramic coated with a metallic film) to some kind of heat treatment in air/oxidising ambinet, and see the stability of the coating at the desired temperature of your choice.
You can devise simple test methods depending upon your application to check the reliability of the coating.

Standard tests such as the ASTM D3359-97 are available. Its easy and quick, but provides qualitative but very useful information. I have attached a file documenting the procedure for scotch tape tests I did (I based it on the ASTM standard test). Hope you find it useful.
