Why not use investment growth of R&D budgets of companies in the field and tie them to IP output and unit sales. While not a perfect measure (it is difficult to separate exogenous/endogenous factors) it is a cycle that can lead to better results than just patent proxies.

Many thanks for your constructive answers! I lastly select comprehensive measures, i.e. IP output, IP input and MRC(indirect measure) to proxy the innovation in industrial green process.
