Dear all,
I am given some free-floating coronal sections of the marmoset brain to do immunostaining. it's important in my research to identify the left and right sides of the sections, and I have had a struggle identifying that especially in the prefrontal as well as medial sections (that include the thalamus). Any hints to sort out this problem will be much appreciated.

How about a little incision on the brain surface ( i.e. left side) before sectioning?
can you perform your analysis using both sides instead of a single one? At this point it will be challenging to figure out the orientation for each slide
Hi Marie, unfortunately the animal is unilateral lesion model. Ive found a way to mount sections consistently (from the pattern of blood vessels), but needed another way just to confirm that

As Behnam Vafadari said before, you can make a one-sided incision on the surface of the brain before making the slices. In this way, each slice will have a notch on the edge of a hemisphere so you can identify between right and left.

as Jesus and Vafadari said before one incision on one side it's the best thing.However, sisnce you receive the tissue is already sectined, you have to ask the people sectioninto make this cut and agree with them which side.
This basically sounds like it was a mistake on their part. There should've been some indication before you received the sections. like others said a notch on one side is the best way, but obviously you can't do that now. What kind of lesion was it and was the lesion located in the same brain region where your sections are? (i.e. was it a prefrontal lesion and you have prefrontal sections). If so, you can stain each section for NeuN or something similar (or mount in DAPI) and the lesion should be able to be visualized.
