I'm automatically capturing images of a specific profile, which varies a few millimeter in position and angle. I am looking for a solution which can automatically detect the left and right edge of the longitudinal profile and insert a ruler to the image.
The profile appears bright on a black background in the images.

Your task seems quite simple in image analysis terms, but you have said nothing about the hardware/software environment you are working in. If you can apply some ordinary "freehand" programming, in any version of C/C++/C#, or Matlab, Python, whatever, it should be a piece of cake. If you are constrained to a particular prewired video processor, then its choice of functions may or may not provide what you need.
