I am modeling melting of an alloy. Can someone please tell me how does Fluent calculates material properties in the Mushy zone in case of melting of alloys? Does it automatically takes properties after we give Tsolidus and Tliquidus or we have to use an UDF for this?
The formula for mushy zone which I have seen in papers is
x = x_solid*(1 - liquidFraction) + x_liquid*liquidFraction
I see in the material properties dialogue box that we can only give a property for continuous temperature range? Any advice is much appreciated

For such simulations, you should set the material properties via the piecewise linear option in fluent. So that fluent could calculate the properties in the mushy zone by the equation you've written.
Hello Ashkan Ghafari , my profile for the solid region is a polynomial and for the liquid, it is a constant value. I tried to use the piecewise polynomial option by giving 2 temperature ranges, one for TTliquidus. But, it did not take discontinuous temperature ranges as input.
I then wrote a UDF for the material properties in three temperature ranges. For the temperature range in the mushy zone(Tsolidus
liquid or solid fraction will vary with the temperature would vary any other properties with temperature too. You may find you want two or three profiles to accurately account for liquid, solid and mushy
Hello Sajid Ahammed , thanks for your answer. I understand that the properties will have 3 profiles for 3 different temperature ranges. I can write the profiles in the solid and liquid ranges. But in the mushy zone, properties are function of liquid fraction also. And I need help in writing liquid fraction in the polynomial profile.
