I'm trying to model the overall energy balance of an electrolysis cell which utilizes an IrO2 anode (for an OER) and an Ag nanoparticle cathode. To find the overall cell potential I must first find the individual potentials of the electrodes.
What is the best approach to do this?
You can use two reference electrodes eg. Ag/AgCl one for the measurement of the cathode potential and the other for the anode.
One reference electrode and a voltmeter is what you need. The voltage measured between REF and cathode is the cathode potential (reported vs. REF). The voltage measured between REF and anode is the anode potential (reported vs. REF). Keep REF as close as possible to the measured electrode. Both measurements are made during the electrolysis.
The difference between these two potentials has the same value as the voltage applied to cell (except iR drop in solution)

With use of reference and counter electrode in voltmeter you can find the cathodic and anodic potentials
