I have two vessels filled with steam at the different pressure of 82 Kpa, 150 C and 10 KPa, 35 C respectively. And these are connected by one pipe with cross section area of 1 m2. I want to find out instantaneous mass flow rate at the perticular time.
When PO/P!>1.8333 the flow is chocked at the end of the pipe.
When the pipe is short friction is negligible (short pipe) the mass flow is given by:
PHI=gamma (P0/c0) A (2/(gamma+1))^(gamma+1)/2/(gamma-1)
where P0 is the high pressure reservoir pressure, c0 the speed of sound in this reservoir, A the cross sectional area of the pipe and gamma=1.3 is the Poisson ratio of specific heats.
When the pipe is long one should use the theory of Fanno to account for the friction.

Hello, generally I agree with the PHI= formulation. However, shouldn't the exponent read ^((gamma+1)/(2*(gamma-1))) instead of ^(gamma+1)/2/(gamma-1)?!
