Question:

I’m modeling a 2D solar receiver (with components like a reflector, glass, insulator, and absorber) in Solid Edge for a thermal simulation in Ansys Fluent. My goal is to export the geometry as a 2D surface (Parasolid format), but I’m facing issues:

Solid Edge Export:

Assigning a nominal thickness (1 mm) lets me export as Parasolid, but Fluent interprets it as 3D.

  • Converting it to 2D in Fluent causes missing parts, meshing problems (sharp edges), and boundary condition errors.

Key Challenges:

  • How can I export a true 2D surface (no thickness) from Solid Edge to Fluent?
  • Are there alternative workflows (e.g., mid-surface extraction in SCDM/DesignModeler)
  • What are the best practices for 2D meshing and boundary conditions in such cases?
  • Any advice on settings, tools, or workflow optimizations would be greatly appreciated!
