I am looking at explaining why "butterfly-like" capacitance-Voltage loops appear in ferroelectrics.
In 2005, Pintilie et al explained the capacitance peaks by their occurrence during the change in the ferroelectrics internal built-in potential that occurs as the bias voltages passes the coercive field. This sudden change in built-in potential results in the discontinuity observed in he C-V measurements.
I would like to request if anyone has any more information on the subject, or has any other reports to expand or confirm this theory. If anyone can provide a more recent journal, or hopefully a texts book explaining this phenomina. I would be extremely grateful.
You can correlate you C-V curves with your P-E hysteresis loop shape and parameters. Shifts in the hy loop along P and E axis as well.
Let's say you have a thin TGS single crystal, which shows a good square hysteresis loop, try taking its C-V measurements. A perfect single crystal with a single domain, will give you a beautiful square hysteresis loop with good saturation Ps, and a clear Ec value. The C-V for such a sample will show you two clear peaks which are sharp, because the C-V hysteresis is square shaped , and all the domains are switching at the same EC value.
Now lets compare polycrystalline ceramics or films, the P-E loops can be sloping, not so well saturated, and also sometimes consisting of dc conductivity contribution as the field increases. Such kind of P-E loops will show you diffused peaks in the C-V characteristics. Moreover if there are any imprint effects, or if you see asymmetric P-E hy loops (shifting either on the x-axis due to built in fields, or shifts in the y-aixs), These will be reflected clearly in the C-V curves.
There are many papers in the literature, which I do no remember now, but you would find them during the years (1990 to 2000), when the initial work on finding suitable applications for ferroelectric films towards FRAM applications was being done.

Just to confirm, by 'diffuse peaks' are you referring to the broad peaks seen in polycrystaline materials, compared to the sharp peaks seen in single crystals?

Dear Professor, Could you give some explanation that how to perform C-V test for ferroelectrics to obtain Butterfly-like" C-V loops and also which instrument and how much applied external voltage could be used? I want to perform this experiment for my material BiFeO3 but I could not find some good literature where I could find complete details how to perform experiment, instrument and technique name? K.
