I have made sub-catchments of approx. rectangular shape for my study, but I am not getting the way to estimate the length of overland flow or catchment width. Now as the catchment width is subjected to calibration, I have taken the square root of the sub-catchment area. How should I proceed in this?
Dr. C.Y.Guo at CSU has written a recent paper on how to compute width as a function of area. It is not linear. See also the SWMM listserver: [email protected] They have the most knowledgeable SWMMers out there, and FAQs on that site will address this far better than I can. I would also suggest you use aquifers to model interflow, if you have any appreciable pervious runoff.

I suppose you can find some useful methodologies on the CHI User's Guide to SWMM, v.9, pp144 to 147 states.
In mentioned manual, a good estimation for the width can be obtained by first determining the maximum length of overland flow and dividing the area by this length.

If you have a rectangular catchment, the catchment width is perpendicular to the direction of overland flow. The catchment length is parallel to the direction of overland flow..
The catchment width is perpendicular to the direction of overland flow which you can measure the average flow path of run-off system.
