Conducting several types of research on this area could help us to find out the correlation. I believe the improvement in any kind of reading skills makes students more motivated and excited.
Agreed, if students believe they are good readers they are more apt to read and if they believe an understanding of the reading will add value, they are more apt to re-read when they need more clarity.
Being an nursing student I can say that i love to read however some articles are very hard to understand at the first or second read which is very irritating. So I would recommend writing In approachable way that every reader could understand.

Fostering reading comprehension skills is not something new, particularly in developed countries, but more attention should be paid to it in medical science students to make their reading time more productive. We know that reading and comprehending 1000 pages textbooks for every course is not achievable unless with speed-reading.
