A patient admitted in alcohol misuse treatment has lower limb arteritis and will do anything to avoid walking. Can one reduce pain throughout an adapted physical activity program? Is it worth promoting walking activities?
first of all you must know which exercises the patient enjoys performing. After that you should encourage this patient to perform resistance exercises, but with no compression of lower limbs. I believe that you can reduce the pain in this patiente due to exercise-induced changes on pain threshold, and the patient will experience less pain! I think that exercises with rubber bands (thera band) are also very interesting. Resistance exercise can promote increase on Nitric Oxide levels, vasodilation, angiogenesis and reduction on artery inflammation. On the other hand, aerobic exercises such as walking could be carried out in the water, this type of activity could be more pleasant, better retain the patient to activity and reduce the impact level on the lower limb joints.
