I am trying to find the band gap of mercaptoacetic acid or thioglycolic acid using cyclic voltametry. Normally people use any electrolytic solution like potassium ferricyanaide and deposited the sample on electrode. However, I am trying to replace the electrolytic solution in the CV cell with the chemical (thioglycolic acid).
Can anyone suggest me is this the right way? Or else any other mechanism for this. Thanks.

Now the answer. The electrochemistry of thiols is very complex. I would not even attempt to use CV for your goal

Why do you need the bandgap of thioglycolic acid? It is not a semiconductor. I do not believe that you can prepare electrode from TGA for photoelectrochemistry, it is soluble and maybe instable. You can measure "simple" redox potentials. TGA has electronic transitions (that may be influenced by the solvent). The optical absorption spectrum can be measured with a simple UV-Vis photometer. The solution of this problem using CV is somewhat like breaking peanuts with a flame thrower.

Thank you very much. I am working on a microfluidic diagnostic device and using water soluble dots for detection. And TGA is the chemical I am using for making water soluble dots. So right now I want to find the HOMO LUMO levels of TGA to see the charge transfer mechanism from the surface of dots to TGA. In one of the papers they just refer that they find it using CV. I have done one experiment using a drop of TGA on working electrode in presence of potassium ferricyanide. However, I am thinking that instead of using potassium ferricyanide as electrolyte what if i use TGA only. Thanks.
