Hello there,

According to my research, conventional BOTDR in the industry can discriminate temperature and strain on the same SMF fiber (according to company's catalogs).

But I learned that on academical papers and in textbooks it is nearly impossible to discriminate strain and temperature on the same fiber. In literature generally, they says that they use some special fibers or two different fiber cables in which one is isolated from strain.

Also, I saw in the webinar of one company that they say "we are using two different cables and one of them isolated from temperature, and the other one can sense strain and temperature. We cannot use the same SMF fiber for discrimination." But on their catalog, I saw that they can use one SMF fiber for BOTDR.

I couldn't understand which one is possible in reality.

Is it possible to discriminate strain and temperature on same SMF or telecommunication fiber with commercial BOTDRs?

I would be very appreciative if you help.

Thanks in advance,

Best Regards.
