The Human Development Index (HDI) evaluates human development through three key aspects: health, education, and standard of living. Health is measured by life expectancy at birth, while education is assessed using two indicators: mean years of schooling for adults and expected years of schooling for children. The standard of living is represented by gross national income (GNI) per capita, adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP). Each dimension is normalized on a scale from 0 to 1, and the HDI is then calculated by taking the geometric mean of these normalized values. This results in a score ranging from 0, indicating low human development, to 1, signifying high human development. Such a comprehensive approach offers insights into disparities in well-being and quality of life, reflecting both social and economic factors (United Nations Development Programme [UNDP], 2020; Human Development Reports, 2020).

In a recent paper about Georgia and Greece, since there were missing data for HDI, I calculated the it as follows: Construction of the Human Development Index (HDI)
Following the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) method to assess long-term progress in human development a calculate the HDI using 3 dimensions
Dimensions and Indicators
Dimension Indicator Measurement
Health Life Expectancy at Birth Number of years a newborn is expected to live
Education Mean Years of Schooling (MYS) Average number of years of education received by individuals aged 25 and older
Expected Years of Schooling (EYS) Number of years a child entering school is expected to complete
Standard of Living Gross National Income (GNI) per capita Adjusted per capita income in purchasing power parity (PPP) terms (log)
The HDI is calculated as geometric mean of normalized indices for each dimension: HDI= (Health x Education x StandardofLiving)1/3. I normalized the series using the general formula : I =Ii-Imin / Max-Min , where Ii represents the value of the variable for each individual year in the series, Max and Min are the values of the entire time series and i= 1,2…n number of years.
Regarding the Education Index I used the formula EI=(MYSind+EYSind) /2 , where MYSind =MYS/15 and EYSind=EYS/18, where 15 and 18 years are the maximum reference values set by UNDP for HDI.
