If you do not radio-label the polymer, then you next best approach would be to track the microbial numbers of active degraders, disappearance of parent compound (i.e., biopolymer), the production and subsequent degradation of intermediates, etc. For accelerating degradation, increasing the microbial activity by using more inoculum, use of a consortium versus individual species, use of inducers, etc.
