How to define 'nothingness', especially in the context of the assumption of various scientists that the universe originated out of nothing?

Scientific community, to a great extent, believes that the universe originated out of nothing and it is still originating its expanse. Subscribing to this viewpoint, then, what should be the form of nothingness? Is it the substance of being?
