MS Word does not have an "export" function (also not for import) for the citation tool. This is the most important disadvantage. However, your claim about "et al" is not true. The citation including et al. depends on the "Style" that you are using. In my case, the publisher requires "Harward - Anglia" and this inserts "et al" automatically.
Probably, you need the add more styles in Word. You can get many from here
Dear Mel, Don't use MSWord's own citation "tool". The secret recipe that researchers use is never to capture references first in MSWord. Use Qiqqa as your repository and import the bibliographic detail with Qiqqa's InCite as you use your annotation report from Qiqqa or write or as you need it. Also use Qiqqa's Sniffer to pull in the bibliographic detail for PDFs from the Web. http://www.qiqqa.com/Register/70557
I used to manage my references with Zotero and also with Citavi. The disadvantages of these tools is when you are writing a paper sharing the file with someone else that is not using the same tool as yours, or when you have to take a flight and you copy your document in the last minute on a usb memory and you forget to copy the tool, as well, and then you are not able to continue working in the document during the journey. Therefore, I decide to use an integrated tool despite all limitations and disadvantages.
Is there any way to tag words for citations to references when I imported nothing?. Then to change format or just to alter citations tagged by some MS Word plugin?. New problems new solutions.
I got stuck. When research meets dead leg day in the gym. Same mental block. Hence not even time for journals import. Thanks again.
I have citations already and references manually in MS word and author name citations are more advantageous in literature. So I am trying to tag my manually written citations. I did not collect the references yet.
Mmmm I am very sorry, but it is still not clear. I am understanding the following: You used "Manage Sources" to introduce manually the references in the document, used "Insert Citation" for citing the reference manually in a particular place in the text, and used "Bibliography" to list the references at the end of the work. The citations and the list of references is formatted according to the selected style. Now, what exactly are you trying to tag?... the citations, the references, something else,... and where your are trying to tag this, and what are you trying to obtain?
No. I used cite them right for me online now to generate but I am reckless as I do not save the exports.
I am focused on text + citations as I typed them up. Now I do not have the exports and if I can tag the citations with reference from MS word it would be faster import and to have that format of linked to endnote citation.
I typed the cited authors without endnote etc so now rather than import references into endnote from scratch how do I proceed the best way?.
As I understand it, you are transitioning from the old "manual" way of doing references, and now want to use a reference manager so that you can use tags to organise. MSWord has no "Export References to manager" function. You definitely do not want to retype the references from MSWord into your reference manager.
What you need to do is conquer the transition from the old "manual" way to the 21st Century. This requires you to do the flow of work properly, and not try to meld the old way and the new way. So:
I assume below that you will use the free program Qiqqa, as it also has autotags and suggests themes, which Endnote does not.
All you need to do is cut and paste just the title of a paper from your MS Reference list into the Qiqqa browser.
Use Qiqqa's Sniffer to locate the source document as a PDF using Google Scholar.
Save a copy of each source document on your computer so that it can be full-text searched by Qiqqa for technical phrases and other keyphrases such as chemical names, and can be tagged. (We always manually tag the document with our intent for the document -- e.g. Chapter1.) We never tag the reference details, and we no longer find documents through abstracts. We also use Qiqqa to autotag so that it can suggest themes to us for future papers.)
All you have to do is verify that Sniffer's suggestion is reasonable. You do not retype or reformat bibliographic details. This reduces errors and effort.
And would this work for endnote afterwards if I want to transfer the files of the folders?.
Thanks for the information. It's just that I wanted to use mendeley but the college does not allow or sell endnote desktop and the plugin really failed to download so I really appreciate the answer. I know how to use endnote and mendeley just needs practise. I'm probably basic at this.
You can transfer from Qiqqa later if you are unhappy with it. If you know how to use Endnote or Mendeley, this will help you to learn Qiqqa. You will then want to learn the new tools such as Qiqqa's Sniffer, Autotags, Themes, Brainstorm, Expedition etc. To learn quickly, watch the Qiqqa tutorial videos.
