I aim to determine the concentration of each element in filter paper containing atmospheric particulate matter, expressed in ng/m³. This data is derived from an XRF analysis of the filter paper. However, I am confused as to why the total %Weight of the elements is reported as 100%. Atmospheric particulate matter is primarily composed of carbon, which can constitute up to 70% of its mass, but carbon is not detectable by XRF. Therefore, the total %Weight should not sum to 100%. Additionally, I would like to understand how to use this data, alongside the sample volume data and total particulate matter weight data, to calculate the elemental concentrations in ng/m³.
On many papers, result of elemental characterization using XRF, such is this paper: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1352231011007047 is always reported in ng/m³. I would be very grateful for any thoughts on this. Thanks!
