I am working on a sol-gel reaction. The precurser titanium nitrate is not available. However, oxide and chloride of Ti is present. Can any one suggest exact stoichiometric ratio for reaction with HNO3?
You need to dissolve TiO2 in concentrated nitric acid to obtain titanium nitrate solution.
TiO2 + 4HNO3 = Ti(NO3)4 + 2H2O
So, to dissolve 79,87 g of pure (100%) TiO2 you need 252,04 g of 100% HNO3 (stoichiometric).
Try adding a well diluted nitric acid solution and stirring slowly for 4 hours at room temperature.
The oxidation state of Ti remains +4 in both TiCl4 as well as Ti (NO3)4. You can obtain the later one by making TiO2 and HNO3 in 1:4 molar ratio.
Thank you Krzysztof Gargul Krzysztof Gargu and Dr. Shrikaant Kulkarni Sir
