Hi Carrie Oh , that is indead a tricky question to answer. I come from a field where we oftentimes borrow the terms 'survival rate' and 'mortality rate' for time series analyses to calculate the effects of certain variables across time on either a desirable or undesireable outcome. In those scenarios, where it is really just a matter of choosing to either assess the positive outcome or the negative counterpart, both rates are directely related and can thus be translated into one another. In health care however, where we have 'true' mortality and survival cases, this transferability is not necessarily given becuase mortality is mostly understood as an absolute measure (you are either dead or alive at a certain point in time) whereas survival is understood in more relative terms (you are either dead or alive at a certain point in time but this point in time is set into relation to another point in time where your health was first assessed). In such scenarios it is not only virtually impossible to directly draw a link between survival and mortality rates but also to compare survival rates against each other when they feature different measurement intervals or even same measurement intervals but that stem from different health care systems: Here is a short video that explains this probably a bit more comprehensive than I did:
