I have a database in which there are several dates indexed as strings and in Shamsi format.
I need them as dates (not strings) and prefer them to be Christian.
I have tried "Date and Time wizard" but because they are in Shamsi format the software doesn't run the procedure.
I know I can use "automatic Recode..." and allocate them values. But does anyone have any suggestions?
There are several SPSS date functions that may be useful.
SPSS string variables can be manipulated by extracting characters from the left, middle, and right segments of the string and then converting the extracted character into numeric format.
For example, if you have three numeric variables (Month, Day, Year) the SPSS Date Creation function (Syntax: COMPUTE MDY_Date=DATE.MDY(Month,Day,Year).) can be used to transform the three numeric variables into a Date. Running the syntax in SPSS will result in the standard long numeric SPSS timecode (elapsed seconds after zeroth date) that must be reformatted to a Date (mm/dd/yyyy) using the SPSS Variable Type dialog menu to change the newly created variable type from the default Numeric syntax output to the desired Date format.

In my opinion it's not possible to convert Shamsi dates into Christian dates in SPSS.
