ZrO2+ Al2O3 + BN = ZrAl3O3N + ???
I have mixed these three nanomaterials and put them in a furnace at a high temperature. I got the primary phase ZrAl3O3N (Zirconium aluminum oxide nitrite) by XRD. I also got some XRD peaks of B12Zr, ZrO2. Please tell me how to complete this reaction and what can be the other materials. Is there any simulation software that can predict reaction outcomes?
Hello Ajaz, Thank you for this interesting question. A stoichiometrically possible equation that matches the products you have already identified would be:
2 ZrO2 + 3 Al2O3 + 4 BN -> 2 ZrAl3O3N + 2 B2O3 + N2O
I cannot judge whether the formation of nitrous oxide is a realistic assumption. But it would be an explanation why no other solid phases were found by you in the powder diffractogram. Perhaps my suggestion can initiate a meaningful discussion here on RG.

Is these reaction is possible?
B2O7 would be an oxide with boron in the oxidation state +VII, so this proposal is extremely doubtful. The second equation is stoichiometrically balanced, as is my proposal. Here we need a statement from an expert in the subject, or analytical studies of the gas phase during the reaction, e.g. with an IR probe.
Mr. Florian, Thank you very much. I cross-checked and found the mistake. It was not B2O7. There are B12Zr and ZrO2 peaks in XRD
