Someone confuse me, he said that when you have some information you want to use it from reference say X, and the reference X inspired this information from reference say Y, then so, I should cite in my work reference Y not X
to what extent this statement is correct?

It basically depends on your style guidelines. However, you can always phrase your citations in a way that does justice to all your sources. If I were you, I would make it clear to the reader that I am referring to Y as cited in X. You can’t cite Y directly unless you have the source yourself. What if you cite Y depending on X and you later discover that X doesn’t cite Y properly or correctly?

It depends on the style you follow in your paper; if for example you have APA you refer to Y in the intext citation since it is the orginal source and refer to X in the list of references. Another way is to refer to the two sources in the in text citation such as ( Jones, 1998 & Miller, 2004) to show that you have the same information.
