Silanization surely is a good way to render glass hydrophobic. Please do not forget to clean the glass surface before silanization as this is important for a good stability. (Please see my suggestions at

It depends on the conditions you store/ apply your silanized glas surface. Avoid high temperature, oxidizing agents, strong acids and alkalis.

I believe you are planning the glass beads for oil recovery experiments and thus, your argument for altering wettability becomes important. However, the process, as far as I am aware, is not reversible.

You can really on any of these chemicals for this- γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, phenyltrimethoxysilane, and methyltrimethoxysilane.

I would recommend using commercial sand (most of them are oil-wet anyway). The size variation can be sorted by controlling mesh size.
