Hello everyone!
Could you please help me with interpretation of a compression test experiment? I carry out compression test on a hydrogel sample. The sample is a wet cylinder compressed between two plates. Image 1 shows the dependence of the force on the displacement of the upper plate. There are three regions (from right to left): no contact region, negative force region and positive force compression region. If I carry out a similar experiment in water (the sample is immersed), the second region is abscent (image 2), since there is no capillary force.
The negative force is approximately 50 mN on a plate with 25 mm diameter. Why is it SO large?
The nonlinear region is presumably explained by the sample shape imperfections - the bases of the cylinder are not perfectly flat and parallel. How could I calculate the Young's modulus from these data? How could I estimate the measurement error?
