Scientists present a method for measuring the opportunity cost of sequestering carbon on tropical farms. They derive the rates of carbon sequestration for timber and agroforestry systems and compute incentive compatible compensating payment schedules for farmers who sequester carbon.

The baseline of a system such as the conventional monoculture can be used as the starting point.
System practices are applied in farming system experiment.
These treatments are monitored over time for the change in the carbon which is proxy for soil organic matter.
Long term experiment of no till monoculture can sequester about 330 kg C per year from the long term comparison.
This increment is very similar to the amount sequesered when raw manure is used.
At the Rodlae Farming System Trial the inclusion of cover crops can sequestion over 600 kg/ha Carbon per year.
When compost can incorporated the increase is between 1,000 to 2000 kg/ha year.
If biochar was incorporation 2,500 kg/ha virtually all of this is retained in the soil and this perhaps the more conclusive and faster sequestration technique.

When Carbon over time increases it is called sequestration and if it remains stable it is sustained and if decreases is its a source of emissions and the soil is in active degradation.
While people have focuses on reducing emissions it more important for resolving the excess enrichment of our greenhouse gases atmospsheric that the soil, biomass, and marine resources are targeted.
