Dear sir, I, Manish Kumar, am a doctoral student in Indian Institute of technology Roorkee, India. Sir, these days I am working on exact quantification of evaporation in the canals and reservoirs. Since net radiation is important parameter in the calculation of evaporation loss by reservoirs and canals, therefore, I am measuring the incoming solar radiation using silicon irradiance sensor. As you might be aware that the silicon irradiance sensor measure only beam radiation (direct radiation). Therefore, It is my humble request to you kindly tell me that how can I develop model for the calculation of net radiation using the above mentioned sensor data. Please help me in this regard ASAP.

The cell measures the hemispheric radiation, beam plus diffuse. The net solar radiation is given by having two identical cells, one facing up and the other one facing down. The difference of output of the two provides the net flux. To have a meaningful upwelling flux, the cells should be at a few meter distance from the surface (try repeating at higher levels).

Thank you sir for your kind reply. Could you please tell me how to calculate total radiation (beam +diffuse) using any empirical formulas if I have only beam radiation? Because I have only one sensor and that is fixed for measuring incoming solar radiation.

i agree with Rui rosa for cells should be at a few meter distance from the surface
With just such a beam detetor, what I can suggest is to look for a Angstrom-Prescott equations adequate to the particular site, and to use the detector to the effect of measuring the sunshine fraction, to be inserted into the A-P equation. This will give the estimate of global solar radiation on that day, in the proportion of the global irradiation that would be observed on a clear sky day.
