My preference would probably vary with circumstance and maybe importance of storm(s) to overall results. I would compare the days of existing data with the site records of the stationin concern. If there is strong correlation with any of the stations or grouping if desired, then I would use that relationship. If the missing data was an important flood, I might try to explore other data as Doppler rainfall records, stream gauging records if nearby, any local rainfall record sometimes collected by individuals. It would always help if you can find information on the type and extent of storms as well as timing.
