Wells should be put on production immediately after the treatment. In that case,
the afterflush volume should be at least the same as the main HCl/HF volume.
When wells have to stay closed in for some time (which is not desirable), the
afterflush volume should be at least twice the HCl/HF volume to displace the
reaction products to a distance where their influence is negligible (3 to 5 ft
radial penetration). A large overflush is necessary to prevent the near-wellbore
precipitation of amorphous silica. At formation temperatures of 95 °C or higher,
amorphous silica precipitation occurs when the mud acid is being pumped into
the formation. The precipitate is somewhat mobile at first, but may set up as a gel
after flow stops. If it is kept moving by overflushing, it is diluted and dispersed far
enough from the wellbore to where it has a less harmful influence.
