if i have prepare the bentonite sample at only one density but test done at different temperature can i show the dependency of swelling pressure of bentonite with degree of saturation?
Swell pressure of dense bentonite buffer are susceptible to saturation affects. The maximum swelling pressure is at zero equilibrium suction. The magnitude of threshold suction was found to be a function of bentonite content. Swell pressure becomes independent of initial saturation at dry density greater than or equal to 1.5 Mg/ cubic Meter. Hydration layers control swell pressures of constant dry density specimens.
Swelling of bentonite clay ( structurally monmorillonite in smectite group of minerals) is maximum with Na cation saturation even at < 15% saturation of its cation exchange capacity. Its co-efficient of linear extensibility (COLE) is often > 1 and at times show a value near 2.
