Please provide example idioms to help RGers understand what you want as a classification system.

One possible source for classification of idioms would be:

Liu, D. (2008). Idioms: Description, comprehension, acquisition, and pedagogy. London & New York: Routledge.

A classification which I have found helpful is:

Opaque (There is no relationship at all between the words and the meaning - e.g. a red herring)

Semi-opaque (there is a hint at the meaning, usually through some kind of metaphor - e.g. burn your bridges)

Semi-transparent (there is a fairly clear hint at the meaning, through metaphor - e.g. pour oil on the flames)

While classification of opaque is fairly easy, there may be occasional differences of opinion concerning what is semi-transparent and semi-opaque.
