For successful application of Flipped classroom approach in HE, the active student participation is a key issue; if they don't study/prepare the oriented content, the in classroom activities probably will fail. Do you have any experience in that regard? Have you found a way to overcome the lack of study/stimulate the independent student participation in their at home activities?
I can think of three strategies right now. These are,
1. Clear Purpose and Relevance:
Thoroughly describe how the pre-class activities are related to the classroom discussions and their overall learning objectives. Demonstrate to students the immediate advantages of engaging with the topic, such as enhanced understanding, better performance on examinations, and the capacity to contribute effectively in class. Connect the curriculum to actual-life situations and job contexts. Showcasing the real-world use of the content helps boost student motivation.
2. Materials that are interactive and interesting: To keep students interested and thinking about what they are watching, use tools that add tests and thought-provoking questions to videos. To get students to do their pre-classwork, use game-like features like tracking their progress, badges, or small rewards.
3. Feedback that is regular and helpful:
Use short, easy quizzes to give students instant feedback and hold them accountable. This also helps teachers see how much students understand and change the tasks in class as needed. Have students review and talk about each other's work in online boards or other collaborative tools. This helps people learn more and also makes them feel like they are part of a group and responsible.
In a flipped classroom, there are several ways to get students involved in tasks that happen outside of class. Teachers can get students more involved and interested in school activities by making it clear how important they are, giving them a variety of interesting material, incorporating work they do outside of class into activities they do in class, and making the classroom a safe and responsible place to learn.
Here are some suggestions for overcoming lack of student engagement in out-of-class activities in a flipped classroom approach in higher education:
- Provide clear instructions and rationales for why the out-of-class activities are valuable. Students need to understand the purpose and see the relevance of the tasks. Communicate this clearly.
- Make activities interactive and applicable. Include opportunities for discussion, reflection, and hands-on practice. Avoid just assigning readings or videos without an interactive component.
- Hold students accountable. Have them complete short assignments or quizzes on the out-of-class content. Make the activities a required, meaningful part of their grade.
I think the lack of engagement/interest has to do with over saturation, if the work in the classroom is interesting and motivates them to think, discuss and have a critical approach to learning there is no need to leave them work outside the classroom. On the contrary, this would saturate them and be counterproductive, I think it is important to respect and even honor their free and leisure time.
In my opinion, and above all, the subject of machine learning must ensure that the student who is impressed with the results avoids falling into the dictation of concepts by all means. You can use other platforms. Nowadays, students reject email, however they remain active on social networks, you could create a Telegram or WhatsApp group or a WhatsApp community, or use Google Classrooms.
And it also depends on the interest that the students have, not everything is on the part of the university professor.
And well, the oldest practice is to propose challenges that give benefits or gains.
Also can:
Take advantage of video creation tools, learning management systems (LMS), content repositories, collaborative platforms, podcasts, and online assessment tools. These technologies play a central role in the flipped classroom model.
Design specific pedagogical activities within the different courses. Encourage students to actively learn new material by reading or watching recorded lectures outside of class. Class sessions may focus on interactive activities, discussions, and group problem-solving exercises through peer instruction.
Implement an improvised and contextualized flipped classroom framework. Consider students' perspectives on participation and effectiveness of self-study. Truly engineered scaffold support systems with best-in-class design can improve effectiveness.
Combine pre-recorded video conferences with in-person sessions that emphasize interaction, discussion, and problem-solving. These sessions provide opportunities for deeper learning experiences.
My opinion is different. Students engage usually by observing the status of their professors (hope) or because of having clear vision. If their professor live the living standard that is better, they will engage for education in/out of class thinking their future life style. Otherwise, students should have a clear vision on their future life so that they engage for clarity. The reality of engagement is therefore based on either having clear vision of the future or observing your surround to get motivated.
