In my earlier reading of some sources in the field of administrative and engineering sciences, I have the following conclusion: Maslow explains all human needs (almost) hierarchically, and in order to rise from a certain level of need to a higher level you must first meet that requirement in full. When it meets its basic needs, it seeks to achieve higher needs as arranged by the pyramid. As we rise to the top of the pyramid, the needs become more and more sophisticated. .

Need for self-fulfillment
Needs of esteem (confidence and self respect, recognition and appreciation of others)
Needs of belonging and love
(affection of others)
Security needs
(stable and predictable environment, without anxiety or crisis)
Physiological needs
(hunger, thirst, sexuality, breathing, sleep, elimination).

Maslow divided the hierarchy of needs in human beings to five stages. The first four levels can be referred to as deficiency needs (D-needs), and the top level is known as growth or being needs (B-needs).

Maslow theory is brilliant and I still use in my teachings in nursing. However, it missed one of the most important needs: comfort (which I included as one of those in the bottom of the pyramid). Comfort in the senseof being free of pain, free of suffering (physiological and psychological). That means, if you have a full bladder your main need is to empty it. If you have "diarrhea" you could care less to other needs, but running to the toilet; if you are in excruciating pain, you do not care for safety or belongingness ....so, there are other needs that were not mentioned as basic needs. In his original scale, the bottom of the pyramid represents all the essential needs for one to exist. But if one is enduring some type of suffering, his existence may be less desirable. Therefore, the "essential comfort" needs should be in the bottom of the pyramid as well...
In 1970 three more levels were added to the original pyramid viz.. cognitive, aesthetic and transcendence needs
I think that Maslow's hierarchy of needs is brilliant. if you are able to think about the priority of your own needs, most likely you will fit into that. There are few adjustments that I believe is necessary though: the inclusion of the comfort (pain and toileting) in the base of the pyramid and the fact that you may not have all of it in one level, but have enough to move on...otherwise, if you stop to think, the scale is brilliant.

" I ask you to reflect on the needs listed: the physiciological needs are needs for one to exist, that means, if you do not have "air" to breathe, then you will not be alive...no food, no shelter, no water, no sleep...no one exists. So, I guess it is not what YOUR need is, but what is the common sense needs of human beings. If you live in the war zone, with bombs firing everywhere, your need of being safe supersedes any other needs above those in physiological level. So, think of Maslow referring to the basic human needs, not the "extra" needs
it is not the amount of "need" that the scales approaches, but what type of needs. You need to have at least minimal necessary in the scale. Some need more, some need less. A specialist in human behavior knows that the lack of some of those will have a long standing impact in someone's life. The scale is brilliant and based on science of human behavior, not computer science...after all, using your words....what a computer would know about a human need? isn't it?
From the perspective of cultural psychology and anthropology, Maslow's hierarchy is clearly based on educated Western cultural models. Many if not most of the cultures in the world do not see "self-actualization" or the development of the autonomous self as an appropriate human need or goal. Instead they emphasize the interconnected self as the highest level of human achievement. This interdependent self is able to correctly read the social cues and understand the needs of others in the context of typical interactions without verbal explanations or explicit bids for assistance from others. In addition, this person consistently bases her/his actions on the needs of the group. In this case, a 'self-actualized' person who is focused on personal needs and the pursuit of individual goals would be considered immature and lacking in proper demeanor.

Michael, I read the paper. It does not dispute Maslow scale, it just puts in perspective how the needs are manifested according to the developmental stage. It is well written but not very clear or easy to read; however, it is helpful for developmental psychologists.
