I would like to know how much can i rely on the protein interaction prediction generated using STRING database by uploading protein sequences. I wanted to carry on an interaction study and came across STRING for prediction. Kindly suggest your valuable inputs. I would be grateful :)
There are three factors.
1. Quality of Uploaded Protein Sequences:
The accuracy of STRING predictions is highly dependent on the quality of the uploaded protein sequences. If the sequences are incomplete or contain errors, the predictions will be less reliable.
2. Organism Being Studied:
The number of known protein interactions for a particular organism can vary greatly. For organisms with a well-studied interactome, STRING predictions are generally more reliable.
3. Type of Interaction Being Predicted
The accuracy of STRING predictions also depends on the type of interaction being predicted. Direct physical interactions are generally easier to predict than indirect functional interactions. For indirect interactions, STRING relies on a variety of computational methods, which may not always be accurate
You can always take the highest confidence score cut off for a greater reliability.
