Through each recycling process, the cellulosic fibers become more fragile and shorter due to various mechanical, chemical and physical treatments they are subjected to. It is recommended that the paper and paper boards be recycled at a maximum of 5-6 times, but this also depends on the quality of the paper and the further application of the recycled paper.
Ordinary sheets of paper, made from cellulose fibers & derived from wood, can be recycled 4-6 times but the recycling process can be extended to 5-7 times if little fresh fiber is mixed with the fiber undergoing recycling.
Due to the steps which are applied (e.g. shredding, chopping, treatment with chemicals including water, heating, centrifuge, and removal of inks or colors by special chemicals), the celluloid fibers become shorter, coarser and more rigid. This imposes limitations on the number of recycling times & one will observe a drop in the qualities of paper with each recycle.
Newspapers - max 3/4 times depends on recycling process such as controlling moisture percentage (5% to 7%), original sources as type of cellulose, high quality wood and bembo goes more recycles.
